How I Got Young Again - Happy Birthday Rick

For Rick's birthday we were in Michigan and he got to enjoy Buddy's Pizza with his sister Annette and her family, then we had dinner at Andiamos with Julian and Dawn Evola! That's pretty much a perfect day for him!

I thought I'd post this article by Mitch Albom for him.

How I Got Young Again

See the Lucky Tiger Grease Stick Band in action. Watch the video!

We were never very good, and it never really mattered. Eight high school guys in a band. Guitar, piano, sax, bass, and drums. Three of us didn't even play an instrument, just stood around singing, "Shoo-bop, shoo-bop." We went by nicknames--"Rico," "Greaso," "Ace"--and we played dances, sock hops, even a local TV show once, singing songs older than we were, wearing hairstyles that were before our time. We practiced in my parents' basement, and we named ourselves after the stuff kids rolled into their 1950s crew cuts.

The Lucky Tiger Grease Stick Band.

Some say adolescence is a time for angst, but eight buddies in a band will help you fight that. My teenage years were spent greasing up, tuning up, and cracking up. All I really remember from high school is laughter.

Maybe that's why, decades later, when I was approaching my 50th birthday and my wife insisted that I do "something special," I felt a rush of ennui. I've always been a reluctant grown-up. I have no interest in suit-and-tie affairs, a few raised wine glasses, everyone so...mature.

"Well, what do you want?" she said.

The truth? I wanted my old basement back.

And so began the best birthday I ever had. It started with seven phone calls and seven anxious responses. "You're kidding?" "Heck, yes." "Count me in." It continued with a visit to my old neighborhood in South Jersey and a request to the McCutcheon family, who now live in my old house.

"Would you mind," our drummer Marc "Rosey" Rosenthal asked, "if we borrowed your basement for a day? Oh...and could we clear out your furniture?"

Incredibly, they said, "OK."

Old song lists were dug out. Instruments were brought in. And finally, on a beautiful Saturday in May, one car after another pulled up to a familiar house. Out stepped Howard, Victor, David, Marc, Sandy, Mark, Perry, and me.

For the first time in 34 years, we were all together.

"Look at you!" "Ayyy!" "Man, you got old!" Although some of us were now physicians or businessmen, we were back to teenaged insults the moment we laid eyes on each other. We rumbled down the steps to the low-ceilinged basement of my youth. We ran the familiar grease through our hair, donned sunglasses, rolled up our sleeves. We plugged in and tuned up.

We were never very good, and we weren't good now. We had less hair. Wider stomachs. Occasionally, we had to pull out glasses to read the lyrics. And it was pretty obvious that "Action Jackson," our guitar player, was not going to do the flying full-leg split he used to do on "Splish Splash." He's a doctor now. He knows better.

But if you love music--and we loved that music--it is always inside you. So, when my piano started plinking and Rosey's drums began banging and Sandy "The Kid" began plucking his bass, I can't explain it, it all came back. At our ages, we can't remember where we left our car keys, but we can still remember who sang what on "Silhouettes." We played only for ourselves and a few family members. A private basement concert. And we laughed until our ribs threatened to snap.

Now, our band's best memories were never of excellence (we didn't have much) but rather of screw-ups and shenanigans. Like the day we played on a beach and got attacked by bumblebees. Or the night when we pulled off a highway ramp and ran across the top of Big D's car. Or the gig where we sang "Sixteen Candles" and, when we got to the part about "Blow out the candles," one of us hit a light switch to darken the room--and all the power went out.

At best, such stories are cute to others. But they are priceless to us. So we told them again, for the thousandth time. And we cracked ourselves up. We sang "Teenager in Love," "Jailhouse Rock," "Great Balls of Fire." We did nearly 30 songs, many from memory. And when we finished, we didn't wash the grease from our hair. Instead, looking like Sha Na Na's retirement party, we piled into our cars and drove to the local diner where we used to stuff into booths late at night and punch songs on the jukebox. We ordered cheesesteaks and fries (the salmon and grilled veggies of adult life were put on hold), and the laughs went on for hours.

Stephen King once wrote, "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12." That pretty much sums up my Lucky Tiger Grease Stick pals. It was nearly midnight before anyone heaved a sigh or looked at his watch.

It was the best birthday of my life. And the kicker is, the whole thing made me feel younger, not older. After all, every good memory is a notch on your life belt, and every happy song you sang is still somewhere inside you, if only in the "twiddle-lee-dee" backups on "Rockin' Robin."

I love my bandmates. I missed them all those years. And I came to realize something as we hugged goodbye in the parking lot and promised another reunion.

We were never very good, but we were always good for each other.

And we always will be.

Rick AND Nancy are coming to Michigan!

Rick and I getting ready for our trip to Michigan for the wedding of my Goddaughter, Alexis Schell, to Jon Schwarz on June 21st! We'll be in town June 17 to 29. It is the first time we have traveled back to Detroit together!

<-- Alexis & Jon

Julian will be flying in for just a long weekend:
arriving late on June 19, leaving early the 23.

Lexi's wedding events will keep us busy Friday, Saturday, & Sunday (June 20, 21, & 22), but I'm working on our "visiting schedule" now. Let's get together!

We are staying in Grosse Pointe. We are actually "house swapping" with Rick B., as he and his kids will be coming out here! They arrive tonight!

----------------

Meanwhile, Rick continues to move along with his projects. This week: he took out some railroad ties in our backyard and installed a short block wall.

Spring Projects -- Yes, it IS Spring Here!

3/11/08:
We ate our first home-grown orange off our own tree today!!!

We have bags full from our neighbors, but this is from the tiny tree we received from my sisters when we moved in here Christmas 2006! It was yummy! I'll have research way back into this Blog to see when the actual orange started. It's been at least 6 months! We had no idea how long it takes for oranges (or our lemons nor our avocados) to ripen! --- WHOA! I just looked: it was May 2007, 10 months ago!

In the shop starting the rain barrel and upper cabinet.

Installed:
Now he's working on the bottom cabinet

Here are a few of the projects Rick has been working on:
  1. Making a rain barrel (never needed THAT in Michigan!)
  2. Buying, irrigating, and planting bamboo (never bought THAT in Michigan)
  3. Building a cabinet for our family room and his new big TV.
  4. And of course, multiple various "fix its" all around the house and yards!
Digging holes for bamboo and installing irrigation.
See the new road going in on the hills behind us? dang.

Me: planting, planting, planting. Got lots of new stuff from neighbors and sisters: new Mexican fan palms, birds of paradise, and a truck load of cactus and succulents! Put in some pansies, and, got my first daffodil to bloom! I miss all the daffodils I had in Michigan. Oh yeah, and I planted 3 macadamia nut trees a 3rd neighbor passed along. Apparently our yards were a macadamia tree orchard before this neighborhood of 14 homes was built in 2001.
Cactus galore! Neighbors giant 40 year old cactus fell. This is about 1/20th of it!
Click on the pic to get a good view!

My classes on Renaissance Art & History are over for awhile, I'm going back to the gym a few days a week, and even took my first yoga class! (I took the "Silver Sneakers" class for Seniors -- dang, they all did better than me! Wait till NEXT week!)

Other fun things: Our next door neighbors went with us to the near-by wineries in Temecula. It was a gorgeous day, 74 and sunny, plus snow-capped mountains were in view.
Temecula Wineries and Snow-capped Mountains
Our neighbors across the street got two puppies which is lots of fun for everyone, except Goldie, who's feelings are hurt as she doesn't get ALL the attention now! (It's "Kodi" all over again!)

Keeping Rick out of Trouble!

We continue to work on improving our yards. Rick has been digging holes for our latest purchases: King Palms.

The first hole was a killer! He thought he might need dynamite! :-) After 3 days of shovels, picks, poles, and well, no dynamite, he got the 1 foot deep hole in.

Fortunately, the 2nd hole out front, was
easy soil and he was done in 20 minutes!

He's now working on the 3rd, and finding
quite a few buried rocks!

------------------------------------

We are also working hard on our walking plan...

One hour a day, almost every day. I thought for a couple of days that the hills were getting easier. Then I remembered it's 20 degrees cooler than last week, and THAT is why I made it up our hills a bit quicker.

The trouble with living up 700+ feet is that the walks always start off DOWNhill..... everything is wonderful. But then it's always UPhill the whole way back, and that last half mile about kills us! We have to get out the door by 8am or it's tooooo hot when we are making that return trip.

There is a lot of beautiful scenery around here to enjoy, the hills, valleys, ocean.... I must admit that we haven't been able to see the Pacific since about May. Even as clear as it is out here, the sea mist clouds the coastline view. It's much clearer in the winter and we'll get our view back!

Update: Sept 17th we saw the ocean again! And it's here to stay till summer.

Do you know this man?

PROJECTS PROJECTS PROJECTS!

Rick is busy busy busy! Here he is installing new pipes for additional automatic sprinklers to our side yard. We planted one of our orange trees there next to the big shed he put in last month, and he is getting ready to build me a gopher and rabbit proof garden. ha. So far those varmits are getting the best of us -- and many of our flowers and shrubs! (But, much better than our neighbors who have lost a dog and two cats to coyotes this year!)

He's also built a small retaining wall, put in numerous drip lines on existing sprinklers, filled 3 trash cans with weeds and shrub clippings (a weekly chore), tried to fix our pool bottom cleaner, built me some dividers for my kitchen cabinets, and I don't know, MANY other little projects.

This week I planted two jasmine plants, a phoenix robellini (palm), a gardenia plant, two tomato plants, a mini rose bush, and 12 petunias (10 of which were immediately eaten!) Oh, and a few flats of ground cover on part of the hillside we are refreshing. I also planted two banana trees Ronee gave to Julian for Christmas. They almost croaked...I forgot they were in his room! We are turning into farmers with all the weeding and plantings!

We did get a patio table with chairs (our anniversary gift), and a chaise lounge (my birthday present). The pool water hit 77 already, and Rick's been in. Only my legs have, so far! It's a great way to cool off while gardening!

Rick's not too happy though: last Saturday someone backed into his F-250 pickup truck at Lowes! ...and drove off. Estimate: $1,200. We are "regulars" now at Lowes, and Home Depot! We go almost every day...sometimes twice!

Julian is coming home this Saturday, May 5th! woo hoo! Better yet, Intuit is paying for his flight and giving him an apartment! woo hoo, woo hoo!! He starts his summer internship May 21st. He'll be with us for a couple of weeks, then he moves into his furnished apartment, also provided by Intuit! Keep using Turbo Tax and Quicken everyone! Gotta' keep the kid employed!
He just completed his Junior year at MSU.

Meanwhile, last Saturday I completed both my Web Design, and, Electronic Design certificates from California State University! These are Saturday programs I began in January. Now, if I decide to purchase the programs for our home computer, I'll be able to design and build websites and could do some free-lance work. I'll start with a 30 day free trial and work on my "Aunt Nancy Adopt-a-Soldier" website first. It hasn't been updated in 3 years! www.auntnancyusa.com

On Thursdays I'm enjoying taking more Italian art & history classes. Currently I'm in a 5 week class on Renaissance Art and Architecture. These are basically lecture classes... no homework or projects. This is exactly the type of class I had been looking for for years! I wanted to get a little knowledge base before going to Italy last year. But it's still great, and especially since the Florence part of our trip was canceled, we plan to go back; possibly in 2008.

Rick bought a house!

10/23/06
This is too crazy!
I leave for my delayed visit to Michigan and the very first morning there Rick finds "THE House" in California for us! After a YEAR of us looking every week, hours on the internet, and hundreds of homes!!!
Crazier yet: He BOUGHT it! I have only seen it online! It's very exciting! We will no longer be in Carlsbad, but move inland one city to Vista, California. We'll have an acre of land on the hillside, a single story home with a wonderful pool with hot tub & waterfall, BBQ grill and bar, a distant ocean view, and a big mortgage!!! It's definately set up for entertaining! We'll be about 12 miles from the ocean instead of 2, and it will be a lot hotter and arid inland. We're ready for the new adventure!

I think we'll get tired of writing out this new street name: "Canciones del Cielo".

Canciones del Cielo means "Songs of the Sky" or "Songs of the Heavens".
Meanwhile, I'm doing all I can to visit as many people as possible while I'm here....It's been fun. Lots of coffee, lunches, dinners, and then wine in the evening. I miss all of you! . . . But it has rained EVERY day!
Adding a lot to that fun is that I'm here in Michigan the entire 7 games of the World Series!!! What a blast!!!
GO TIGERS!!!!!
-------------------------------------------------
UPDATE NOVEMBER 1ST, 2006
Yesterday Rick took me for my first actual look at our new house !! It's beautiful! The pool is gorgeous as was expected. Now Rick can relax just a bit as we start signing all the paperwork. All this excitement filled in for the lack of excitement from the Detroit Tigers!
We should be moving in around Christmas! Julian will be here to help then too.
Meanwhile, I'm still going for physical therapy for my left arm/elbow twice a week, and most of my vertigo issues are gone, although not completely. I'm expecting Christmas/New Year's to be my full recovery dates. We'll see! http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/disorders/bppv/bppv.html WEAR YOUR BIKE HELMET -- ALWAYS!! Even with mine on, I'm having these problems 3 months later. (Oh and by the way, medical costs have now exceeded $52,000!).
